4 Extremely Inexpensive Swimming Pool Repairs (that actually work)
From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pages/bad-repairs.html this video talks about four examples of swimming pool repairs / temporary fixes which are extremely cheap but actually help to solve the problem. As a general rule it is not a great idea to cheap out with swimming pool repairs as this can often end up costing you more money in the long term, however there are some traditional swimming pool repairs which can solve serious problems, at least for a while until a more permanent solution can be determined.

That’s interesting, I hired a pool guy to service my pool about a year and a half ago. A month ago, my pool got severe algae. I checked the chemistry, and my cya levels were zero. He’s been using stabilizer free chlorine. So not sure you need to drain your pool, the cya went somewhere.

"puddles"😳 = When I was 8, I walked through a puddle at a large pool, it looked like a regular puddle but it was SLIPPERY like an ice rink... I FELL, walking, landed on the back of My head, CRACKED My skull. People fell trying to get to Me. It was so slippery. The puddle was clear, no visible slime, but from that day forward, I am very cautious about "puddles". I puked for 2 weeks, major headache... I remember seeing the X-ray of My skull & tHiNkiNg "THAT'S not Me?!!" Lesson learned: puddles can be dangerous even when walking. 😱

Living rural Texas... 30,000 pool is fenced, surrounded by pasture. I was reading the labels of "lake & pond" supplies at Tractor Supply a few years ago. I noticed "per acre"... Did the math for 30,000 gallons and figured out the Copper Sulfate Crystals are way less expensive via "lake & pond". 👍 Also added a "Power Saver 1200" to the breaker that serves the pump. Boy, did THAT instantly save Me $50 a month on the electric bill. So, I added another one to the breaker to the AC. 👍 Local water is always HIGH pH, adding Acid is how I bring the pH down. Currently upgrading to a larger Sand Filter, instead of buying replacement parts... Replumbing PVC again. 🙄 THANKS for the info... Locating PVC connections can be a hassle... buy more, return what isn't needed saves trips to the store. 👍

Managed pools for 50 years, and I've always been able to get them clear using just basic balancing and chlorine levels - no exotic additives. This year, for the first time, I had a big issue with phosphates. No idea where these came from, and had never tested for them before. A professional advised me about this problem I was not really even aware of, but sure enough the test revealed it. The phosphate remover was miraculous, and my green pool was solved in a little over a day. Has not recurred, but the phosphate test kit is now part of my arsenal. I do not test every day or even every month for this, but at least every season it is now a must. In the rare instances where I used pool companies to manage a pool, the technicians always added truckloads of Cyanuric acid. Big mistake - It makes your chlorine ineffective. I don't know who teaches them to shoot for high levels of this. I always use liquid chlorine, and will add a stabilized tab every once in a while if the level is really low, but it is definitely not something I add often. On DE filters - yes they are messy, and no, you don't want to breathe it, but the filtration really is better than cartridges or sand, and if you like crystal clear water they are the way to get that. One more thing - wildlife....specifically raccoons! If you have an open pool you MUST find a solution to keep them out. This is a danger that is getting worse, as the intestinal worms they carry are becoming far more prevalent across the US, and the microscopic eggs they leave are indestructible through chemical methods, and too small to be removed by filtration. Ingestion of a microscopic amount of these can leave you with incurable brain damage, including paralysis and stroke-like symptoms for life. This was not a significant danger just a few short years ago, but it is now, and it is getting much worse. Other wildlife carry similar parasites, but they do not go in your pool. Raccoons will and do - they love water, and they express their joy by pooping in your pool, putting you and your whole family in grave danger. If you don't have a pool enclosure, you're going to want to consider it as a priority. Don't have raccoons in your area? Do you live on Mars?

Another simple quick fix that makes a huge difference is making sure the skimmer weir gates are present and in good working order. It's a common enough problem that I always keep 2 or 3 on my truck. It's also one of the first things I look at when starting up a new weekly service customer. If the gate is missing, or it is no longer buoyant, the skimmer won't draw floating debris into it. All the debris that would otherwise be drawn into the skimmer ends up on the bottom of the pool. I actually installed one at a friend's pool party yesterday, just checked the skimmer as a creature of habit! They retail for about $15-$20. Your videos are such a great resource of information for DIY and pool pros alike. Thanks!
